Help For The Troubled Lawyer
Are there days when you go home with nothing left to give, utterly drained by the stresses and strains of the day, too exhausted to do what you want to do or to spend times with those you want to be with?
Are there days when the only way you can wind down at the end of the day, or raise the enthusiasm to go back to court in the morning, is by having a few drinks that, over a period of time, become more than a few?
Is there someone that is bullying you, emotionally or physically, and making your life a misery?
You are not alone - there are many lawyers in the same position as you. You, too, do not have to suffer such issues alone. LawCare is there to help.
What is LawCare?
LawCare is a registered charity that, since 1997, has been providing free and confidential health support and advice to Judges, Solicitors, Barristers, Legal Executives and other legal professionals across the UK and Ireland. It is funded by grants from the professional bodies for the groups it assists, but is entirely independent of those bodies.
What does LawCare do?
LawCare's primary purpose is to help lawyers, their families and staff who are impaired by alcohol and/or drug use or abuse, stress or depression, and other health and related issues which impact on their ability to practise law or to conduct their day-to-day lives. LawCare also provides support and assistance to the employees, colleagues and families of lawyers thus afflicted.
LawCare operates a 365 day a year, freephone helpline on
9am - 7.30pm Monday to Friday
10am - 4pm Weekends and UK Bank holidays
Those answering your call will be former practising lawyers, trained in telephone counselling skills, and can offer the following:-
· Guaranteed complete confidentiality
· Early identification of impairment
· Basic initial telephone counselling
· Information regarding the illness or impairment. This is available in printed form, or on our website if you prefer to remain anonymous.
· Motivation to seek help
· Referral to a LawCare volunteer-a fellow lawyer who has recovered from the problem and can offer one-to-one support, friendship and encouragement
· Referral to a professional counsellor. Many of the counsellors on our database are former lawyers who understand the pressures of practice.
· Referral to a treatment centre or organisation, self-help group or other body which can assist
· Monitoring of recovery where appropriate
No less important, LawCare informs and educates the legal profession on the causes and consequences of such problems, and how to try to prevent them occurring. LawCare provides free (save for expenses) and CPD accredited stress recognition and management training at the time and place of your choice.
There is also an excellent website, full of useful information, at www.lawcare.org.uk and access to the Well-Being Portal where you can do an entirely free, confidential and personalised assessment of the sources of stress in your life and develop a plan for dealing with them. Information and help can also be obtained by e-mailing help@lawcare.org.uk.
