Membership and Membership fees
There are six types of Membership of the Association:
Student Membership: Any person wishing to qualify as a Paralegal must first become either a Student Member or an Affiliate Member of the Association. To become a Student Member, application must be made on the appropriate Form accompanied by the appropriate Registration fee and Student Membership subscription. No one can sit for the Higher Certificate in Paralegal Studies (Associate Level Qualification) unless they are fully paid up Student (or Affiliate) Members.
Affiliate Membership: (which is on the same level as Student Membership) is granted to all those who have successfully undertaken any legal course at a lower level than the Higher Certificate (including Legal Secretarial Qualifications), or have appropriate experience. Affiliate Members are encouraged to proceed to pass the Higher Certificate in Paralegal Studies and thus upgrade to Associate Membership, and are able to do this without first becoming Student Members.
Associate Membership: is open to all Student and Affiliate Members who have obtained the Higher Certificate in Paralegal Studies, Advanced Award in Paralegal Studies for the Voluntary and Community Sectors, have a legal qualification and/or experience acceptable to the Association or who are granted a Licence. Associate Members are eligible to use the designated letters 'A.PLL' after their name. Application for Associate Membership must be made on the appropriate Form. Only fully paid up Associate Members are eligible to use the designated letters 'A.PLL'
Fellowship: is open to all Associate Members of the Association who have gained their Fellowship Award. No exemptions are possible from this. Fellows are eligible to use the designatory letters 'F.PLL'. Application for Fellowship must be made on the appropriate Form. Only fully paid up Fellows are eligible to use the designatory letters 'F.PLL' after their name
Graduate Membership: is open to anyone who has a Law Degree or the CPE/Post Grad. Dip. Law and who has passed either the LPC, the Association's Post Graduate Diploma in Paralegal Practice (PPC), or the Procedural Law Module of the Association's Higher Certificate in Paralegal Studies. Graduate Members are entitled to use the designatory letters 'Grad.PLL'. Application is made on the prescribed Form.
Licensed Paralegals: Anyone with an acceptable qualification in law, e.g. the Association's Higher Certificate, ILEX, Law Degree or HND ( plus a procedural law qualification) or any other qualification deemed suitable, and who can satisfy the other criteria laid down, is eligible to apply to become a Licensed Paralegal.
